Yakutat Students Learn About Wetlands Science

  Yakutat's 6th grade students joined with the US Forest Service and the City and Borough of Yakutat to promote conservation of wetlands and gain experience in wetlands science and research occurring within their community. Yakutat Wetlands from Sarah Spencer on Vimeo.   The students put together this video showcasing their wetlands studies as an entry for both a national video contest and a local Alaska contest, the Chugach Children's Forest Wetlands Youth Media Contest. The contests are for schools and youth organizations participating in wetland and watershed stewardship, and winners receive $1,000 to support their wetlands stewardship projects.   The contest is offered through WetlandsLIVE, a distance learning program that provides a year-long emphasis on wetlands through a series of live webcasts. The Sitka Conservation Society Fish to Schools Program Alaska imports more than 95% of its food and the average grocery store only has enough food for three days. The Sitka Conservation Society is working towards creating a more resilient food system by supporting local efforts to protect the habitat of wild foods, support traditional harvest/subsistence lifestyles, increase local food production, create access to wild seafood, reform the school lunch program to include local foods, and increase awareness of local fishing culture.   The Sitka Conservation Society (SCS) is a founding partner and coordinator of the Sitka “Fish to Schools” program. The deadline to apply for the National Forest Foundation's Southeast Alaska Community Capacity and Land Stewardship Grant Program has been extended to April 19, 2013     Through this Community Capacity Land Stewardship (CCLS) grant program, the NFF is administering USDA agency funds to provide capacity building support for local collaborative efforts that work toward achieving watershed restoration objectives within the geographic focus areas. The purpose of this grant program is to provide the tools and support necessary to achieve watershed and landscape scale restoration while also furthering goals that contribute to the economic sustainability of communities.
