Climate Change Adaptation for At-Risk Communities

May 12, 2015; 10:00 – 11:30 am AKT – Climate Change Adaptation for At-Risk Communities. Presentation by Michael Sookiak, Community Coordinator, Native Village of Shaktoolik. Michael, Community Coordinator for the Village’s Local Climate Change Strategic Management Plan focusing on addressing the impacts of sea level rise and coastal erosion. Michael will discuss implementation of the strategic management plan which details community oriented strategies for the community to become more resilient to coastal hazards and the effects of climate change.

Topic Includes:
1) Obtaining funding for emergency preparedness and/or relocation of native villages in the Norton Bay Watershed most critically impacted by coastal erosion and flooding;
2) Developing a localized climate change adaption plan that fit the specific needs of the Native Alaskan Villages in addressing extreme storm events, coastal erosion, flooding and other emergency mitigation strategies including protection of human life, buildings and infrastructure;
3) Engaging in emergency planning, preparedness and response monies and critical emergency equipment from federal entities and full participation in State planning for emergencies.
