Yakutat Coastal Learning Center

The City and Borough of Yakutat Office of Planning and Natural Resources has partnered with Yakutat Public Schools, the US Forest Service, and Americorps to develop the Yakutat Coastal Learning Center.

The goal of this project is to establish the office of Planning and Natural Resources as the center of education, research and public outreach in the Yakutat community. The project, staffed by Bill Lucey and Sarah Liben of the Planning and Natural Resources office, and Americorps member Phillip Carson, will accomplish this goal through an array of different objectives and projects including:

-the development and integration of a place-based environmental curriculum focusing on themes related to fisheries and wildlife for grades K-12

-the development of a science center for use by researchers, community members, students

-the involvement of students in research and restoration projects taking place in the community, and with the City, Forest Service and/or Department of Fish and Game

The Yakutat Coastal Learning Center project aims to enrich the science curriculum in the Yakutat schools with classes and hands-on activities that will teach students and their families about the myriad of natural resources in and around the community and the importance of conserving these resources for generations to come. The development of the science center will act as a focal point for on-going research as well as a hands-on laboratory for inquiry and exploration.  This project will benefit the community of Yakutat, as well as natural resource professionals involved with projects through the City, the Forest Service and the Department of Fish and Game.
